Sometimes however operators attempt to make a side pull or use the hoist horizontally to lift an object that is not directly underneath it. Container lift is done with parallel crane like hoists which can lift a container from the ground or from a railway vehicle. Side pulling is one of the most common and most dangerous mistakes made with overhead cranes. Overhead cranes can improve safety and efficiency in many applications but when operators misuse them they can also become a serious safety hazard.

Overhead crane hoists are typically designed to lift objects vertically.
